Belgium is a relatively small European country located in Western Europe, between France and the Netherlands. It is densely populated with around 11 million people. Belgium is the heir of several former medieval powers, and you will see traces of these everywhere while visiting this country.
In 1830, Belgium won its independence from the Dutch as a result of an uprising by the people. A constitutional monarchy was established in 1831, with a monarch invited in from the House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in Germany. Belgium is a hereditary constitutional monarchy. The current monarch is King Filip, who took the oath of office on July 21, 2013.
Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and is also home to the headquarters of the European Union and NATO (among many other major international organizations). Belgium has three official languages, with around 60% of the people speaking Dutch, 40% French and a small minority speaking German. The country is also very well known for its beers. There are actually 178 breweries in Belgium.
